The Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) was started back in 1975 to increase the dialogue between the United States and Japan. The nonprofit is based in Tokyo; with its U.S. affiliate JCIE/USA located in New York City.
When the tragic earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit Japan’s coast in 2011, JCIE took an active role in collecting information around the relief.
Some of the real important work goes on after the news coverage goes away. Those stories usually go untold, so we wanted to offer a resource to share those stories and best practices around relief.
David Monico Program Associate JCIE/USA
The organization quickly put together resources to maximize the efforts but realized there was little documentation around donations by Americans. Monico’s team wanted to change that, so they set out to create a donor database of all grants earmarked towards Japan relief efforts.
JCIE’s searchable database includes over $1 billion in donations made by organizations overseas.
