uspsThe U.S. Postal Service is onboard with Obama’s cloud computing initiative, recently signing an enterprise agreement with Caspio. USPS manages 34,000 retail locations and delivers to every address in the nation – but unlike other government agencies, it doesn’t rely on tax dollars to pay for operating expenses.

U.S. Government Gets Onboard with Cloud Computing

Posted by Frank Zamani on September 21, 2009 under Commentary, News | Comments (0)

The Obama administration recently presented its plans to utilize cloud computing to reduce federal IT costs, accelerate innovation, and democratize data. The shift to hosted information management will allow the U.S. government to free up some of the $76 billion it currently spends on IT, $19 billion of which is taxpayer dollars. The technology innovation and cloud computing effort will be led by America’s newly appointed Federal CIO, Vivek Kundra.

By shifting to the cloud, the government also hopes to become a greener organization. Currently, they own hundreds of datacenters and server farms across the nation. In addition to being a large investment and requiring 24/7 IT oversight, the datacenters leave a significant carbon footprint, as they need tremendous amounts of energy to power and cool the servers they house. The datacenters often perform similar tasks and are used at a fraction of their capability. Migrating to the cloud will help reduce duplicated efforts and utilize computing power more efficiently.

We are excited to see a positive shift towards cloud computing at the federal level. Caspio already serves many municipal, county, state, and federal government agencies, and our platform lends itself well to the strict security and service-level requirements in this sector. The infrastructure employs multiple layers of platform security and reliability, including top-of-the-line firewalls, data encryption, and hosting at a leading SAS-70 certified datacenter.
